The Datong HW13709XSTC Heavy Manual Sync Gearbox has a maximum input torque of 1350 N.m in direct gear and 1600 N.m in overdrive gear. The maximum input speed is 2400 RPM. The torque is 1500 N.m. The gear ratio range is 9.509-0.725. The weight is 327 kg (405 kg), the oil capacity is 9.5 L (10.5 L), and the total length is 859 mm (935 mm). This gearbox is suitable for heavy-duty vehicles with a power range of 240 to 320 horsepower. (The weight does not include the lubricating oil and clutch release bearing; the length refers to the distance from the front face of the clutch to the output flange; the data in parentheses are for when a retarder is installed.)
In the detailed model name, “HW” represents the brand. The number “13” indicates 1% of the torque, with the 1/10 notation used when the torque is less than three digits. The number “7” signifies the series number for the heavy-duty transmission series. “09” denotes the number of forward gears. “X” indicates helical gears in the main box. “ST” stands for a fully synchronized double intermediate shaft, and “C(2)” represents the overdrive gear.

Use, Maintenance, and Precautions for HW13709XSTC Transmission
Requirements for use
Correct and reasonable operation and use of the transmission and regular maintenance are very important to ensure safe and reliable driving of the vehicle and extend the life of the transmission. Please follow the following usage requirements:
1. Lubricating oil brand
The transmission should be filled with SAE 80W-90 long-life gear oil (compliant with J2360) vehicle gear oil.
2. Correct oil level
The oil level is checked through the oil level observation port on the side of the housing. The oil level should be flush with the bottom edge of the oil level observation hole. The oil filling volume is about 9.5L (9.6L when a power take-off is installed).
Too much oil will cause the transmission temperature to rise and oil leakage; too little oil will cause poor lubrication of parts, and in severe cases, a box burn accident will occur.
3. Oil level check
The oil level should be checked regularly, and the vehicle should be parked on a level surface when checking the oil level. Due to the volume expansion of hot oil, in order to prevent inaccurate measurement, the vehicle cannot be checked immediately after driving, and can only be checked when the oil level is stable and the oil temperature is close to normal temperature.
4. Replenish lubricating oil
To prevent chemical reactions between different types of lubricating oil, it is essential to replenish the lubricating oil with the same model as the original when topping up.
5. Oil change cycle
When changing the transmission fluid, it is necessary to first drain the existing transmission fluid completely from the transmission.
A new transmission must have its lubricating oil changed after driving between 2000 to 5000 kilometers.
The oil level and leakage of the lubricating oil should be checked every 10,000 kilometers, and supplemented as needed.
Under heavy load conditions, in severely polluted environments, or during continuous work on steep slopes, the oil change interval should be appropriately shortened.
Conditions of Use | Long distance transport vehicle | Municipal vehicles
Urban construction vehicles Transport dump truck Mixer Truck |
mine site vehicle |
---|---|---|---|
Oil change cycle | 100,000 km or 10 months | 80,000 km or 10 months | 25,000 km or 5 months |
6. Operating Temperature
The maximum temperature of the transmission during continuous operation must not exceed 120°C and the minimum temperature must not be lower than -40°C. If the operating temperature exceeds 120°C, the lubricating oil will decompose and shorten the service life of the transmission.
Any of the following conditions can cause the transmission’s operating temperature to exceed 120°C.
- Operating continuously at a driving speed of less than 32 km/h.
- High engine speed.
- High ambient temperature.
- Vortex Surrounding transmission.
- The exhaust system is too close to the transmission.
- High-power overspeed operation.
7. Working Tilt Angle
When the operating inclination angle of the transmission exceeds 15°, lubrication may be insufficient (the operating inclination angle is equal to the mounting angle of the transmission on the chassis plus the ramp angle).
8. Drag or slide
When the transmission is working, the shafts and gears of the transmission rotate continuously, which can provide sufficient lubrication for the transmission. However, when the vehicle is towed with the rear wheels on the ground and the transmission system connected, the intermediate shaft gears and main shaft gears of the main box do not rotate, while the main shaft is driven by the rear wheels to rotate at high speed, which will cause serious damage to the transmission due to lack of lubrication.
To prevent such occurrences, the following points should be noted:
Never allow the vehicle to coast in neutral with the engine turned off.
Never depress the clutch pedal to allow the vehicle to coast in neutral.
When the vehicle needs to be towed, the half shaft can be pulled out or the transmission shaft can be disengaged, or the driving wheel can be towed off the ground.

9. Do not shift the transmission from a higher gear to a lower gear when the vehicle speed exceeds 26 km/h.
Matters needing attention
1. When shifting gears, the clutch must be fully disengaged, and the gear lever should be properly positioned in gear.
2. When the vehicle is in low gear (crawl gear) or reverse gear, you should stop the vehicle before shifting to avoid damaging the internal parts of the transmission. When shifting into reverse, a greater gear selection force is needed to overcome the reverse gear lock resistance, and the shifting force is also greater than that for forward gears.
3. When the transmission shifts from low gear to high gear (and vice versa), do not skip gears, otherwise the service life of the auxiliary box synchronizer will be affected.
For the transmission assembly with a single H control mechanism, when shifting gears from the low gear range to the high gear range (and vice versa), you should first place the switch valve in the H position, then step on the clutch, shift to neutral, release the clutch, and consciously wait for a moment in the neutral position. After that, press the clutch pedal, shift to 5th gear (1st gear position), and release the clutch. Do not skip gears, as it will affect the service life of the auxiliary box synchronizer.
4. When the vehicle is going downhill, it is forbidden to change the high and low gear zones of the auxiliary gearbox.
5. Depending on the road conditions, start in 1st or 2nd gear.
6. Before the vehicle starts, it is necessary to wait until the air pressure rises to the starting air pressure before releasing the parking brake, and then shift gears to start.
7. Before driving, it is required to warm up the car properly and wait until the water temperature reaches above 45 degrees before starting in gear.
8. If abnormal sounds are detected from the transmission during use, or if the operation feels significantly heavy or other abnormal conditions occur, one should immediately stop the vehicle for inspection, and only continue driving after the fault has been rectified.
9. The transmission is equipped with a main and auxiliary box interlocking mechanism. When the auxiliary box is not shifted in place, the main box shift is locked. If you cannot engage the gear when shifting, the main and auxiliary box interlock may be at work. Please Wait a moment and then shift into gear. If you still cannot shift into gear, you should check the range cylinder and its air circuit to confirm which component has a problem and repair it in time.
10. The transmission within the “three guarantees” (warranty) period must not be disassembled or assembled without authorization.
