Datong Gear Factory was established in 1958 and has a history spanning 66 years. Initially, it was not named Datong Gear Factory; it was known as Datong General Machine Tool Factory, which did not specialize in gearboxes and gears. Its main products at the time were locomobile and centrifugal water pumps. In 1963, Datong General Machine Tool Factory was renamed to Datong Agricultural Machinery Parts Factory, primarily producing tractor parts and cast iron pipes, which marked a slight connection to the truck industry. A year later, in 1964, the factory underwent another restructuring and was renamed Datong Gear Factory, formally entering the gearbox business. It began to focus on the production of heavy-duty truck gearboxes, engine gears, and automotive transfer cases. By 1997, Datong Gear Factory completed its corporate reform and transformed into Shanxi Datong Gear Group Co., Ltd., which is a state-owned asset company affiliated with Shanxi Province. After the reform, Shanxi Datong Gear Group Co., Ltd. continued to produce the main products that were its focus prior to the reform.
In 1998, the company listed with Taiyuan Heavy Machinery Group with some of its excellent assets and established Datong Gear Branch of Taiyuan Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., which mainly produces light, medium and heavy-duty automobile gearboxes, engine gears and other products. By the end of 2008, Shanxi Datong Gear Group Co., Ltd. became a wholly-owned subsidiary of China National Heavy Duty Truck Group. All 82.92% of the shares of Datong Gear held by Taiyuan Heavy Industry were transferred to China National Heavy Duty Truck Group, and Datong Gear has been renamed China National Heavy Duty Truck Group Datong Gear Co., Ltd.
Sinotruk Datong Gear Co., Ltd. is located in Datong, the site of the world-famous Yungang Grottoes. It covers an area of 500,000 square meters and is a large state-owned enterprise that produces heavy-duty vehicle gearboxes and automobile engine gears.
China National Heavy Duty Truck Group Datong Gear Co., Ltd., originally known as Datong Gear Group Limited Liability Company, was primarily engaged in the production of agricultural machinery gear transmission products before the 1980s. In the mid-1980s, the company entered the field of automotive transmission manufacturing. Through three technological introductions from Nissan Diesel, it gradually developed a range of 5, 6, 7, 9, and 12-speed triple-shaft fully synchronized transmissions with torque coverage from 45 to 150 Kg.m. Through international cooperative design, the company has acquired a multi-speed, high-torque series of transmission assemblies with 16 forward gears and torque ranging from 200 to 220 Kg.m, featuring planetary gear technology in the rear auxiliary gearbox. By the end of 2008, Shanxi Datong Gear Group Co., Ltd. became a wholly-owned subsidiary of China National Heavy Duty Truck Group. All 82.92% of the shares previously held by Taiyuan Heavy Industry in Datong Gear were transferred to China National Heavy Duty Truck Group, and Datong Gear has been renamed to China National Heavy Duty Truck Group Datong Gear Co., Ltd.
The predecessor of China National Heavy Duty Truck Group Datong Gear Co., Ltd., Datong Gear Group Co., Ltd., mainly produced agricultural machinery gear transmission products before the 1980s. In the mid-1980s, it began to enter the field of automobile gearbox production. Through the three introductions of Nissan Diesel advanced technology, it gradually formed a 5, 6, 7, 9, and 12-speed three-axis full-synchronous gearbox with a torque coverage range of 45 to 150Kg.m; through international cooperative design, it has a 16-speed 200-220Kg.m multi-speed high-torque series gearbox assembly with planetary mechanism rear auxiliary box technology.
On November 18, 2008, Datong Gear Group joined Sinotruk and became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sinotruk. It introduced the manufacturing technology of the dual countershaft with planetary mechanism auxiliary box of Sinotruk, and formed the HOWO series gearbox with 10, 12 and 16 gears and a torque range of 130-210Kg.m. Sinotruk Datong Gear Company has hundreds of products of various types of automobile gearboxes with 7 gears ranging from 5 to 16 gears and 18 series, becoming a well-known domestic automobile gearbox and transmission gear manufacturer.
In addition to its parent company, China National Heavy Duty Truck Group, the company’s main suppliers include Dongfeng Motor Corporation, FAW Jiefang, FAW Qingdao Automobile Plant, Liuzhou Motor, Shanghai Passenger Vehicle Factory, Yangzhou Yaxing, Nanjing Chunlan, and YTO Group.
